The cheapest solution to
ensure you comply with the law is to carry an NF-Approved disposable
breathalyzer.

There are two types available -
Standard kits, which have the line indicating at 0.05% BAC (this
compares to 0.08% in the UK) and Pro kits, which are much more
sensitive and accurate - they show a line at 0.02%. They are
also ideal for Professional, Commercial and Coach drivers who are
prosecuted at 0.02% or above in France
AlcoDigital have been appointed
UK Importers for Contralco, the largest manufacturer of such kits
who as well as being a French company also supply the Gendarme, so
are a highly respected and well known company.
ALL our kits (inc. the 5-pack) include 1 x tube & 1 x bag
per kit
Some companies are selling "Twin Packs" that contain two tubes,
but only one bag in a single package; it therefore cannot be
split between two vehicles and once one tube is used, the remaining
tube is left in an unsealed pack. All our kits include both 1
x tube and 1 x bag per kit and come in a sealed, waterproof plastic
sachet, as shown below:
NF Approved The Decree states that the breathalyzers MUST be listed in the
"Official Journal of the French Republic" so
you should only purchase NF-Approved
Breathalyzer Kits if you want to be certain they will be accepted by
the French Gendarme.
Any device that
is NF Approved will have the logo opposite on the packaging and the
supplier should be able to provide you with an NF Certificate - the
certificate for the Contralco tubes can be seen
here.
How many do I need? Some sources are saying you must carry at least two on the
basis that if you've used one to test yourself, you'll need another
to show the Gendarme if you're stopped. Not true; if you've no
intention of using them (or don't drink!), just carry one. But then
if you DO test yourself and find you're over, you'll need a second
to check you ARE OK before you do drive... and a third to show the
Gendarme. So entirely up to you - buy just one in order to simply
comply with the law, or a pack of 5 and have a few spare.
The Gendarme WILL NOT
ask you to do a breath test for them using your own kit - they will
use their own, Digital Breathalyser should they suspect you've been
drinking.
To read the result,
just check the crystals....
If the crystals are
ALL Yellow, the result is zero - you are
Clear to go!
If
the crystals are Green BELOW the line, according to the tube, you
are under the maximum limit. But you DO have alcohol in your blood
and your judgement and reaction times will almost certainly be
affected - you should consider waiting a while and retesting
If the crystals are
Green BEYOND the line - your are definitely over the limit.
DO
NOT DRIVE!
